| The DNA Project works from what we call a "wish list" from the FSL which ranges from fitting out the Imaging Workstations to minor supplies such as surgical scissors to remove DNA samples from evidence (such as clothing) right up to the DNA profiling instruments which instruments range from R300 000 to R1million a piece . Other “must haves” are items such as A GPS that can give the examiner co-ordinates of the exact spot of the crime scene; software to assist members of the crime scene team to do crime scene reconstruction and 3D bloodstain pattern analysis of crime scenes; Infrared/UV digital cameras that will assist the CSI to examine dark exhibits for the presence of blood or bodies for the presence of bruising and even Books on crime scene investigation and wound identification. The purchasing and supplying of equipment is an ongoing Function of the DNA Project and we are continually in the process of deciding on and allocating funds for this purpose in conjunction with the Trustees of the Leigh Matthews Trust.
Both the FSL in Pretoria and WC Lab require a minimum of 2 "sets" of DNA Profiling Equipment - below is a breakdown of the cost of what is considered to be a "set". In the WC Lab specifically, the DNA Profiling equipment is now considered to be outdated and no further spare parts can be procured. Whilst the DNA Project understands that the items listed below may be well beyond its fund raising capabilities, it is hoped that a large corporate may assist with funding in this area.
A Set of DNA Profiling Machinery is made up of four parts, namely:
